How can this possibly exempt you from legal recourse from property damage? It’s not even legible until you’re close. I want a sign that says, Warning! Stay back 200 feet, not responsible for punched faces!

“WARNING: Oblivious to DOT’s cargo securement requirements!”

In the end, they will have to pay. That little sign doesn’t make them exempt.
Qualification: This exact situation happened to my mother in what is now my car. Their insurance had to pay for the damage when rocks/pebbles came up and damaged the windshield.

Pretty stupid especially considering that most people will have to drive up to 30' or 50' just to get to actually read the damn sign

Good luck getting their insurance information.

That can be the issue definitely. I can’t remember how she got their information but she did somehow. I wasn’t there when it happened

They can say whatever they want, doesn’t make it true. See also:

That said, I wouldn’t put it past the trucking industry to have secured laws making them immune in at least some horribly corrupt states.

Is that a Tesla sign?

Why should they have to pay for cracked windshields? Trucks throw stones. It’s a fact of life. Your problem for getting too close.

So I suppose when I’m moving houses and my couch comes through your windshield you’ll accept responsibility for driving behind me?

Truck tires picking up stones from the road and throwing them=/=unsecured load.
You not tying down your couch properly is your fault.
Me getting too close to a truck knowing full well their tires throw stones is my fault.
![]() 07/19/2016 at 08:30 |

These are gravel trucks. Their load is gravel, and the rocks come from the bed not the tires.

Ah, gotcha. Still... pretty hard to secure gravel. I say a warning sign should at least mean 50/50 responsibility. Not this one, though. Something along the lines of “This vehicle carrying loose gravel—stay well back” would be more sensible.

Back off. Move over. Get past ASAP.

Warning: we must remain “business friendly”, no cover is required for this open-air load of glass-breaking stones.
